The Negative Press Has Gotten The Attention of Mountain Dew
Last week PepsiCo announced that it was pulling its new ad for Moutain Dew [designed by Tyler the Creator] which features a goat in a police line up. The decision came after severe criticism and backlash from social activists. Dr. Boyce Watkins even said that he felt the ad was “arguably the most racist commercial in history.”
“What does the aforementioned have to do with Lil Wayne” you ask? Well, prior to the controversy of Tyler the Creator’s goat commercial, Lil Wayne had also come under fire for some controversial lyrics in a song called “Karate Chop“. The connection?… Lil Wayne, [like Tyler] had an endorsement deal with Mountain Dew. Boyce Watkins and friends suggested that the pattern of recklessness was a result of Mountain Dew’s indifference to injustice.
“offensive reference to a revered civil rights icon does not reflect the values of our brand.”
The negative press has apparently gotten the attention of the corporation and now it is being reported that Mountain Dew has decided to officially terminate the endorsement agreement with Lil Wayne. PepsiCo, Mountain Dew’s parent company issued a statement Friday saying that Wayne’s “offensive reference to a revered civil rights icon does not reflect the values of our brand.” Lil Wayne issued a statement last week in response to the controversy. The Till family felt that the statement fell short of an apology.
According Allhiphop, Airickca Gordon-Taylor feels that she can now “exhale and focus on our beloved Mamie Till Mobley’s charge”. In a formal statement issued to Allhiphop.com The Till family has indicated that it is pleased with PepsiCo’s decision to ultimately drop the endorsement.
