Hundley’s Lawyer Says That He Is Being Portrayed Unfairly, That He Is Not Racist
According to reports a 60 year old Idaho man named Joe Rickey Hundley has been accused of slapping a 19 month old toddler while aboard a passenger airplane. On February 8th, 2013 Hundley was seated next to Jessica Bennett and her son. As the plane began its descent into Atlanta, the 19 month old boy began to cry, possibly because of the altitude change, and Bennett tried to soothe the child.
Mr. Hundley, who was seated next to the mother and son, was allegedly heard telling the mother to “shut that (N-word) baby up.” After this, Hundley allegedly turned around and slapped the child in the face.
According to CNN.com there’s an FBI affidavit that says the baby suffered a scratch below his right eye. Other passengers on the plane assisted Bennett, and one of them heard the slur. Todd Wooten told agents that he “heard derogatory language coming from the rear of the aircraft” and got up to investigate. Wooten is also said to have confirmed that he saw Joe Rickey Hundley strike the baby.
Hundley’s employer, Unitech Composites and Structures, initially suspended Hundley from his position with the company. CNN.com reports that Hundley’s position with Unitech has now been terminated. Hundley’s lawyer, Marcia Shein, has reportedly stated that even if her client did use the slur, it does not make him a racist.
